It tried to take Doom towards a survival horror angle, which made it a decently atmospheric game but also took away what made it doom.ĭoom 2016 is good because it focused on what made Doom games good - very fast paced, ruthless action where you fought your way through everything and felt like a badass. So Doom 3 checked all those "is this a Doom game?" boxes I had in my head. Large, maze-like maps and doors that required color keys didn't factor into it because all first person shooters around then did this, which to me reflected the genre at the time and was not IP specific. 10 year old me took away from Doom 1 and 2 that Doom is about a space marine shooting demons in space stations and hell. How well you liked Doom 3 I think depends on what you took away from Doom and defined a Doom as. Unsure if the BFG edition lets you play the original way, which is what I recommend unless you find it just too annoying. This mechanic worked just fine with me but I know a lot people didn't like it.

People were particularly annoyed with the flashlight (which is why the BFG edition comes with the duct tap mod built in) but the game was really supposed to be this tension increasing dichotomy of being able to see where you were going or being able to kill what wants to kill you.
It's a FPS for sure but with a much larger focus on survival horror than any of the other Doom games.
